About us
Research Objectives
Our research focuses on Environmental Health.
We concentrate on diseases related to the environment such as lung diseases, diabetes and illnesses of the immune system, and we contribute to the elucidation of the mechanisms of neurodegenerative diseases, cancer and other chronic diseases.
The origins and courses of these diseases are influenced by the interaction of personal risk factors, life-style and environmental conditions. We analyze interactions between genetic predisposition, biological systems and environmental factors in order to develop new, individualized approaches in prevention, diagnostics and causal therapy. One of our major goals is to link basic research and clinical applications, using a multiple-indication, cross-disciplinary approach. Research at Helmholtz Zentrum München is carried out in three thematic fields which correspond to the program-oriented funding (POF) programs of the Helmholtz Association.
