Institute of Diabetes and Regeneration Research (IDR)
Diabetes is a widespread disease in the population with a steadily increasing incidence. The main cause is the destruction or dysfunction of insulin-producing beta cells. The research activities of the Institute of Diabetes and Regeneration Research (IDR) focus on the biology and regeneration of the pancreas, especially the insulin-producing beta cells. It identifies risk genes in order to better understand the pathomechanisms of diabetes mellitus and seeks to discover novel drugs that enhance beta cell function. The primary aim is to enable regenerative therapy approaches for the treatment of diabetes mellitus and thus to provide alternatives to traditional immunological and metabolic therapy approaches. The combination of highly motivated top researchers in the fields of developmental and stem cell biology and the scientific-technical infrastructure at Helmholtz Zentrum München enable these innovative approaches.
