Institute of Diabetes Research (IDF1)

The main research areas of the Institute of Diabetes Research (IDF) are the pathogenesis and prevention of type 1 diabetes and gestational diabetes. The primary objective of the Institute is to identify mechanisms that lead to the initiation and progression of diseases. In order to develop intervention strategies, it studies gene-environment interactions and identifies markers for the early diagnosis of type 1 and gestational diabetes. Furthermore, using preclinical models, the Institute studies mechanisms that initiate islet autoimmunity and conducts prevention studies. In various research groups the Institute focuses on the following topics:

• Type 1 diabetes cohort studies
• Phenotyping (immunological, metabolic)
• Type 1 diabetes prevention; clinical studies
• Gestational diabetes / type 2 diabetes — Pathogenesis and prevention
• Bavarian diabetes registry “DiMelli”
• Preclinical models
