Research Group Translational Diabetology (TD)

The research group Translational Diabetology (TD) is working to improve diagnostic, preventive and therapeutic possibilities in the areas of prediabetes and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Using primary cultured adipocytes, myocytes and hepatocytes of extensively phenotyped donors, the aim is to characterize the pathobiochemical, genetic and epigenetic mechanisms that are responsible for the transition from prediabetes to diabetes. Based on the mechanistic insights gained in this research, new molecular biomarkers shall be identified which can be used to assess the individual risk for type 2 diabetes and can aid in early detection of this disease. Furthermore, molecular targets for the prevention and therapy of type 2 diabetes can be defined.
