Concept
Radiation research provides the scientific basis and the methods to protect man and his environment against ionizing radiation risks from natural and anthropogenic sources. The Department of Radiation Science (DRS) encompasses all main areas of current radiation research and radiation protection.
The DRS combines expertise in the following areas:
- Fundamental aspects of cell biology and biophysics
- Behavior of radioactive materials in the environment
- Radiation dosimetry
- Radiation risk analysis
- Use of radiation for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes
- Advisory functions in national and international bodies
Radiation research at the DRS is characterized by its high degree of coordination and networking, enabling it to utilize the latest technologies and draw on top level research expertise. The Department thus optimally complements research conducted at Helmholtz Zentrum München: Here researchers are investigating the relationships that exist between lifestyle and individual genetic predisposition in the development of complex diseases.
This is an essential basis for the development and evaluation of new therapies, diagnostic procedures and preventive strategies. The translation of basic research into applications is made possible through the scientific-technological infrastructure and central technology platforms. Another factor contributing to the rapid transfer of scientific insights into medical practice is the intensive cooperation with clinical partners.
Furthermore, key priorities of Helmholtz Zentrum München are promoting the young generation of scientists and scientific education and training. The Institute offers specialist training courses and information events on radiation protection, conveying the current state of knowledge to physicians, scientists, technicians and members of the police and fire departments.
