Short curriculum vitae
Prof. Wichmann was born on April 20, 1946 in Elmshorn, Germany. After studying physics and medicine in Cologne, he received his habilitation 1983 in biomathematics, medical documentation and statistics. 1983 to 1988 he was Head of Biostatistical Unit – Medical Institute for Environmental Hygiene, Düsseldorf, Germany, and until 1995 Director of the Department for Labour Safety and Environmental Medicine – University of Wuppertal, Germany. In 1990 he came to the Helmholtz-Zentrum München – German Research Center for Environmental Health (at that time GSF Research Center for Environment and Health). Since 1995 he is Full Professor of Epidemiology at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich.
Prof. Wichmann is the winner of several national and international awards, such as the Ludwig Heilmeyer silver medal and the Bavarian State Medal for Environment and Health. He was president of several epidemiological societies and member of important scientific advisory boards of the World Health Organization, the MAK-Commission and the Commission on Radiation Protection. His scientific work focuses in the field of epidemiology, which deals with the distribution of diseases in the population and the risk factors for these diseases. His special focus is environmental health and, more recently, genetic research and biobanking. Overall, Professor Wichmann has published more than 450 scientific papers.
