Institute of Ecological Chemistry

The Institute

With its spectrum of topics, the Institute of Ecological Chemistry (IOEC) deals with questions concerning the environment, its effects on human health and the anthropogenic influence on the environment. The IOEC excels by linking cutting-edge analytical techniques to scientific challenges in the fields of chemical biology and ecotoxicology, thus connecting the research areas environment and health.

It is known that even in lowest trace concentrations, allochthonous, anthropogenic and natural materials can affect animated systems. Besides the reliable detection of such materials in the environment as well as in organisms, the molecular interactions with the affected animated systems and the consequences -- such as illness -- are of interest. Correlations are identified for well chosen biogeological systems and subsystems using targeted and non-targeted metabol(n)omic markers in order to detect malfunctions at an early stage and to develop preventive measures.

The analytical competence of the institute and the collaboratively developed research attempts are available to the whole research centre. The institute works continuously to further advance the analytical methods and experimental approaches which are necessary for new fields of interest and future challenges.
