Theoretical Biology
Welcome to the research group "Theoretical Biology" of the IBB.
We develop mathematical models to provide insights into complex phenomena in life science with focus on environmental health, not directly accessible by experimental approaches alone. We aim to promote the application of mathematical modelling and to stimulate multi-disciplinary research. Our group comprises mathematicians, biologists and chemists from different fields, emphasising lively and multidisciplinary teamwork with other mathematical and experimental research groups within the Helmholtz Zentrum, Germany (e.g. the Center for Mathematical Sciences, TU Munich), and abroad. Our aims are implemented in an integrative approach by a variety of strategies, ranging from development of mathematical tools, evaluation of experimental results to the derivation and testing of biological hypotheses and theories.
Our research encompasses areas as diverse as modelling of diabetes, bacterial communication, vaccination strategies, xenobiotica in the environment among others.
Deterministic and/or stochastic mathematical structures considered by our research group are e.g. discrete and continuous dynamical systems, graph theory, kernel-based methods of machine learning, among others.
