BABYDIAB Study
The BABYDIAB study is the first prospective cohort study that examines the natural history of islet autoimmunity in 1650 children of patients with type 1 diabetes. The BABYDIAB study was initiated in 1989 and has up to 20 years prospective follow-up. All participants are tested for islet autoantibodies regularly.
BABYDIAB aimed to determine when islet autoantibodies first appear, which genetic and environmental factors influence their development, and what islet autoantibody characteristics were most associated with progression to type 1 diabetes.
Essential knowledge about the aetiology of type 1 diabetes was achieved through the BABYDIAB study. Finding of the BABYDIAB could show that islet autoimmunity in people developing type 1 diabetes in childhood is often initiated within the first two years of life and that besides genetic factors also environmental factors may play a role in the development of islet autoimmunity and type 1 diabetes.
