TrialNet Natural History Study –
early diagnosis and risk estimation of type 1 diabetes
The aim of the study is to allow an exact risk estimation for this disease. Therefore, relatives of people with type 1 diabetes can be tested on autoantibodies – the “precursors” of type 1 diabetes - in the Natural History Study. This provides a first risk estimation. In case of a confirmed positive result, the participants can have their risk determined more detailed in phase 2 and 3 of the study.
Participation is free of charge for persons aged 1-20 years, if they have a first, second or third degree relative with type 1 diabetes. With a first degree relative with type 1 diabetes, participation is possible up to age 45. In this relative, the diabetes must have been diagnosed before the age of 40 years, and insulin treatment must have started within a year.
