Type 1 Diabetes Prevention

Diabetes prevention has the goal to prevent the development of islet autoimmunity in children with familial or genetic risk (primary prevention) or to stop the expansion of beta cell destruction in antibody-positive children and adults (secondary prevention).

Immune intervention aims to reduce the autoreactive immune response and preserve the residual beta-cell function (tertiary prevention after onset of type 1 diabetes). The efficacy of these therapeutic strategies for diabetes prevention are not yet definitively proven, but previously completed studies have shown promising results. As dose-ranging, age-dependent effects and safety of these therapies are still under research, these therapies are not available for common use yet.

Diabetes Prevention therefore is carried out in the context of controlled clinical research studies in which patients can participate with recently diagnosed diabetes or individuals at increased risk for diabetes.
