Pre-POINT: Study for non-diabetic children with type 1 diabetes in the family

Pre-POINT is an international study to investigate insulin vaccination for type 1 diabetes prevention. Children take the insulin by mouth as a powder on a daily basis. Insulin given that way does not lower blood glucose, but is supposed to influence the immune system like a vaccination and to prevent the development of islet autoimmunity and type 1 diabetes.

The Pre-POINT study investigates an optimal insulin dosage for the vaccination in children with a very high risk for diabetes. Children taking part in Pre-POINT can also participate in the subsequent POINT study, if they wish to, where the effectiveness of the vaccination is being investigated.

In order to find children with a very high risk for diabetes, a diabetes risk screening is conducted. Children from all over Germany between 18 months and seven years of age and who have a sibling or two first grade relatives (father, mother, siblings) with type 1 diabetes can participate in the risk screening free of charge.

This study is supported by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF).
