Mouse mutants affecting eye development and the function of ocular tissues are being characterized in a molecular, functional and morphological manner. The most frequent defects observed up to now concern early eye development or affect lens transparency (cataracts). Mutations are mapped and molecularly characterized. Based upon the mutation analysis, signalling cascades are investigated by reporter gene studies.
New screens have been established to search for mutants suffering from retinal degeneration and to quantify microphthalmia. Further screens are currently being established under the umbrella of the German Mouse Clinic (GMC). There is intensive cooperation with the other genetics institutes at the GSF (IEG, IHG, ISF).
