Working group 3: Health Services Management

This working group deals with issues in health care management. The basic approach is to analyse these issues theoretically and empirically, and to develop, on the basis of the evidence, proposals to support the decisions of various actors in the health care system. Theoretical and empirical concepts and methods are used from different sub-disciplines of economics, but also from the social sciences.

Organizational and management options for health insurers and health care providers are assessed as well as choices available to insured persons. In addition, management issues of the statutory health insurance are analysed at the operational and at the strategic level.

On the side of health care supply, the management of health technologies and health care analysed with respect to costs, to health effects and to cost-effectiveness. The management of innovation of pharmaceutical products and of products derived from biotechnology is an issue of special interest. With respect to health care demand and its financing, the impact of alternative ways to organize health care and health insurance are analysed.
