Research interests:
- Decision making about medical innovation in theory and practice:
- Decision analytic cost-effectiveness and value of information analysis
- Ethical principles for prioritization in health care
- Comparative analysis of fourth hurdle institutions
Current research projects:
- Fair and reasonable prioritization of genetics services (collaboration with EuroGentest Unit 3).
EuroGentest is an EU-funded Network of Excellence (NoE) with 5 Units looking at all aspects of genetic testing - Quality Management, Information Databases, Public Health, New Technologies and Education. Through a series of initiatives EuroGentest encourages the harmonization of standards and practice in all these areas throughout the EU and beyond. This subproject develops a model for fair and reasonable prioritization of genetics services. - Early economic evaluation of innovative medical technologies in the framework of the project REGiNA (Sub-project 17)
REGiNA stands for the concept of a centre of applied regenerative medicine (RegMed) in the region between Stuttgart, Tübingen and Necker-Alb (Federal state of Baden-Württemberg). The aim of the project is to promote innovative products and processes by introducing them to the health care system on a test basis. Sub-project 17 is concerned with the health economic aspects of regenerative medicine. In particular it is researched in how far the early economic evaluation of technologies developed in the framework of the REGiNA project can facilitate future market access and possibly influence the ongoing development process - Individualized Health Care: Ethical, Economic and Legal Implications for the German Health Care System (ELSA funding programme)
Due to genetic and physiological variation, patients differ in their health risks, chances for curative treatment and reactions to specific drugs. In the future, it is expected that the prevention and treatment of diseases will be tailored more specifically to individual patients or patient groups. Decision-makers hope that this individualized approach will improve the quality and efficiency of health care. The current interdisciplinary project will consider problems related to individualized health care from an ethical and legal as well as economic perspective, and the health economic analysis will be carried out at our institute. - International comparisons of processes for coverage decision making.
Fourth hurdle institutions are internationally highly heterogeneous and the criteria used in decision practice are frequently unknown. Based on selected case studies particularly in the field of prevention and screening, this study compares different decision processes and outcomes across Europe.
