Research unit 2: Economic Evaluation

This research unit deals with the development of methods for the clinical and economical evaluation of health care interventions and with the application of these methods within economic evaluation studies.

In cooperation with clinicians and epidemiologists we conduct studies in the areas of myocardial infarction, diabetes, COPD, dementia, and multimorbidity in the elderly. Our approach to health care research and health economics includes randomized and observational studies as well as analyses of health insurance data. In our team economists, statisticians, and colleagues with medical or social science background cooperate jointly in these projects.

The research unit has a special interest in methodological questions of economic evaluation, and its members have expertise in

  • study design (study protocol, sample size estimation)
  • statistical methods (bootstrap estimation, multi-level models)
  • measurement issues of cost and quality-of-life data
  • modelling techniques (Markov models, sensitivity analysis).

With its KORA research platform the Helmholtz Center Munich has established a unique chance for population-based health research in Germany. This working group has taken responsibility for methodological support and data management of the KORA studies and the Augsburg myocardial infarction registry.
