Clean water - healthy life

The Institute of Groundwater Ecology studies the beneficial functions of groundwater ecosystems, which maintain the quality of our drinking water. Our research therefore provides the basis for a preventive protection of environment and health.

Anaerobic degradation

We investigate natural degradation processes for an efficient application of bioremediation.

Microbial ecology

We aim at a better understanding of the processes in the groundwater in order to evaluate its ecological status.

Molecular ecology

Molecular methods disclose the diversity and functions of microorganisms in the groundwater.

Environmental isotope chemistry

By use of new analytical methods we identify degradation pathways and quantify the degree of biodegradation in contaminated groundwater.

Hydrogeology

We investigate temporal dynamic and spatial heterogeneous water and matter fluxes in the subsurface contributing to a better understanding of processes in ecohydrology.

Hydrological Modelling

We model groundwatern dynamics and determine the residence time of reactive particles in the subsurface.
