What do we do?

This research group is concerned with the determination of individual doses from natural and artificial sources. For example, the secondary field from cosmic radiation is measured, and procedures for dose estimation of air crew members are being developed. Further work is done on the development of new active dosimeter systems for the detection of neutrons, photons and radon. Activities are also focussed on the retrospective neutron dosimetry of the A-bomb survivors from Hiroshima and Nagasaki, which represent the major cohort used in international radiation protection for quantitative risk estimates.

  • Operation of a sensitive whole-body counter for research measurements
  • Maintenance and development of the program package EPCARD to calculate doses to aircrew members
  • Measurement of secondary neutrons from cosmic radiation at low atmospheric shielding (on the Zugspitze mountain, Germany) and low geomagnetic shielding (on Spitzbergen, 79o N)
  • Development of active electronic dosemeter systems for neutrons, photons and radon
  • Retrospective neutron dosimetry of the A-bomb survivors, to improve risk estimates currently in use for intenational radiation safety regulations
