About the Helmholtz Zentrum München

The Helmholtz Zentrum München is the German Research Center for Environmental Health. We investigate chronic diseases which develop from the interaction of environmental factors and individual genetic disposition.

A broad understanding of the mechanisms of disease shall bring forth innovative methods of diagnosis and therapy to contribute substantially to a future worth living.

Prevention and causal therapy will be the characteristics of future medicine; therefore the center is focusing on chronic diseases. In the future the Helmholtz Zentrum München will strengthen its capabilities in systems biology, chemical biology, structural biology as well as translational research and biophysical imaging.

The Helmholtz Zentrum München places emphasis on excellent basic research, internationally used experimental platforms and clinical cooperation groups, as well as centers for translational medicine, thus carrying into effect the close link between basic research and clinical application. A further objective is to give knowledge-based advice to policy makers, society and the individual citizen how to prevent the development of environmental disease.

The Helmholtz Zentrum München is a research institution of the Federal Government and the State of Bavaria within the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centers.

The Helmholtz Association, the largest scientific organization in Germany, is a community of 15 scientific-technical and biological-medical research centers with a total of 26.500 employees.

The Association strives to gain insights and knowledge so that it can help to preserve and improve the foundations of human life. It does this by identifying and working on the grand challenges faced by society, science and industry. Helmholtz Centers perform top-class research in the fields: Energy, Earth and Environment, Health, Key Technologies, Structure of Matter, Transport and Space.

In the future, the Helmholtz Zentrum München will be represented within the research field Health of the Helmholtz Association with both programs, Environmental Health und Systemic Analysis of Multifactorial Diseases, as well as in the field Earth and Environment with the Terrestrial Environment program.
