Current KORA Studies

KORA-Age Network

KORA-Age is focusing on the research of long-term determinants and consequences of multi-morbidity.

The research consortium composed of clinicians, epidemiologists and social scientists has the objective to identify determinants and consequences of multimorbidity in aged persons, based on the KORA cohort.

Objectives

Objective 1: To determine the prevalence of multi-morbidity, functioning and successful aging in people over 65 years old in a large cohort of randomly selected inhabitants of the region of Augsburg, Germany.

Objective 2: To identify determinants for multi-morbidity, mortality or functioning and successful aging based on risk factor profiles at cohort entry.

Objective 3: To identify the factors that are associated with multi-morbidity and functioning at older age as well as successful aging in a random sub-sample of the cohort.

Objective 4: To evaluate the potential of case management support by trained nurses to prevent re-hospitalization in patients with myocardial infarction (Interventionsstudie KORINNA).

Study Designs

Three study designs were selected:

(A) A Mortality follow-up in 2008 of approximately 8,800 subjects aged 65 to 94 years of the KORA-cohort and a morbidity follow-up by means of a telephone interview (estimated 5,000 subjects) (objectives 1 and 2).

(B) Examinations in a random sample of the cohort, namely of 500 men and 500 women between 65 to 89 years to assess intermediate phenotypes of diseases and aging, functioning and disability, mental health and cognitive impairment, social support and attachment (objective 3).

(C) An intervention study with myocardial infarction survivors aged 75 years and older (objective 4)

Shedding light on the complex interplay of disease and treatment, functioning and mental health will help design strategies for maintaining independency in as many people as possible and for as long as possible.

Duration of the Project:

36 months

Survey Timeline:

 * The mortality- and morbidity-follow-up in subjects under 65 years is not funded by the BMBF.

Evaluation is supposed to be finished in spring of 2011.
