KORINNA Study

A Case Management Intervention Study for Aged Patients with Myocardial Infarction

The KORINNA study is investigating whether Case Management can improve the health care quality of aged persons with myocardial infarction.

KORINNA is a sub-project of the study „Successful Aging“ (KORA-AGE) and is funded by the Ministry of Education and Research.

More than 300 patients of the Central Hospital of Augsburg will participate in the KORINNA study.

Contact partner is PD Dr. Christa Meisinger (MD) ()

Particulars of the KORINNA Study:

1. Preface

With this study we aim to improve health care quality of patients aged 70 years and over who had suffered a myocardial infarction.

Aged persons frequently have a high prevalence of comorbidities after a myocardial infarction associated with physical limitations which often diminish the quality of life even more. In many cases comorbidities are the reason for hospital readmission, and in addition multiple medication often results in adverse outcomes.

Nowadays patients generally are being discharged from hospital very quickly and there is no time to give them the necessary explanations about the scope of their illness and how to take the medication or to inform them on preventive measures to avoid a readmission to hospital.

In this study we are investigating a case management model (i.e. giving advice and medical care) for aged patients with acute myocardial infarction. We offer advice on the day of discharge and thereafter trained nurses make telephone contacts and home visits. We aim to achieve an improved quality of health care and of life.

Which parts does the study program comprise?

The study is investigating two different models of health care after hospital discharge. Aged myocardial infarction patients will be randomized into two groups, i.e. either into the case management intervention or the usual care group, and will be accompanied for one year.

  • During hospitalization a medical examination is conducted (body height, weight, blood pressure, lung auscultation). The patient is being interviewed to record her/his state of health, medical history, and quality of life.
  • At least every three months the patient is interviewed either by phone or in written form with regard to her/his state of health and medication intake.
  • In one of the two groups home visits are conducted if need be.
  • After one year there will be again a medical examination which is basically structured like that at the hospital.

All examinations and interviews are conducted by physicians or experienced and trained nurses.

Participants don’t have to pay for the examinations.

How we make sure that we comply with data protection principles?

Your personal data, i.e., name and address, will be stored exclusively at the KORA Myocardial Infarction Registry in order to being able contact you. Scientific data obtained during the study are transferred to the Helmholtz Zentrum München without name or address, i.e., they are anonymised.

This method has been approved by the Data Protection Officer of the Ethics Committee of the Bavarian Chamber of Physicians.

You can revoke consent at the KORA Myocardial Infarction Registry at any time without having to indicate reasons. If desired all individual-related documents and materials will be deleted.
