Technical details

  • 48 stainless steel-cylinders (V4A) with a base of 1m² and a length of 2 m
  • each lysimeter is hanging on 3 high precision load cells
  • the outflow is connected to weighable leakage tanks
  • monolithic assembly of soil layers and water unsaturated zones
  • instrumentation with tensiometers, TDR-probes, suction cups, and temperature sensors
  • in five depths (30, 50, 80, 155 and 190 cm), more information at UMS GmbH, Munich UMS GmbH, München
  • four lysimeters have gas tubes for analysing the soil gas concentration in five depths (30, 50, 80, 155 and 190 cm)
  • segmented and unsegmented drain for analysing the soil heterogeneity
  • 16 lysimeters are inside a radio-active control-area

agricultural soils

  • gleyic Luvisol
  • brown soil over sand

water unsaturated zone:

  • tertiary sands and clayey sands
  • quaternary carbonate gravel

forest soil:

  • section of the soil of Höglwald (filled by hand)

periphery of the lysimeter:

  • registration of climate data in a meteorological station

basic researches:

  • water flow and pollutant transport in the water unsaturated zone
  • determination of transit times using environmental and artificial tracers such as stable isotope content (2H/1H, 18O/16O ) in the precipitation and the outflow and deuterated water or chemical tracer, resectively
  • the influence of crop rotation on the concentration of chemical constituents in the seepage water (pH, DOC, Na, K, Ca, Mg, Cl, SO4, Sulfate, NO3, Al, Fe und Mn)
  • numeric simulation of the water flow
