GenRE
GenRE is the upcoming MIPS Genome Research Environment. It consists of distributed, reusable components based on a J2EE middleware to provide substantial support for biological / bioinformatics research. Due to its modular and multi-tiered architecture it provides the posibility to reuse one or many components together with existing software, hence simplifying the integration of various bioinformatics resources. Although single components like its content management system (CMS) or its data integration layer are valuable on their own, its real advantage is achieved by combination of the GenRE core components together with external data and tools.
GenRE is not a single piece of software or a collection of algorithms. It is designed as a research environment for mid-range data management and processing. Although the current emphasis is influenced by the needs of MIPS, the concepts and implementation can be well used for any similar system.
