Flow Cytometry Laboratory

Leader: Wolfgang Beisker

Background

Flow Cytometry is one of the key technologies in any biological laboratory. Cells and subcellular structures, from viruses to small multicellular units, can be analyzed and analytically prepared depending on many factors. The huge variety of applications corresponds to a large number of technologies adapted from Biology, Chemistry and Physics as well.

The flow cytometry laboratory as a cytometric core facility supports GSF scientists in their cytometric work and conducts own research to develop cytometric methods aimed at the analysis of structural and functional properties of cells, subcellular structures, phytoplankton and bacteria. A cell sorter equipped with three lasers and a high-end flow analytical instrument (LSR II), and a laser scanning cytometer to work on slides. As a prerequisite for modern flow cytometric work, a fluorescence spectrometer and fast digital imaging microscopes are available.
