We are a member of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres, a leading association Europe-wide, focusing on "Environmental Health".
The aim of our research is to proactively detect health risks for both humans and the environment, decoding the mechanisms of pathogenesis and developing concepts for prevention and therapy of diseases.
The Technische Universität München (TUM) and the Helmholtz Zentrum München are presently advertising two full professorship positions for this consortium
Job Description
The successful candidates will be appointed to W3 Professorships at the TUM. At the same time the appointees will either head the Institute of Diabetes Research/Beta Cell Biology or the Institute of Diabetes Research/Insulin Resistance at the Helmholtz Zentrum München.
The new Institute of Diabetes Research/Beta Cell Biology shall focus on beta cell biology and regulation and its role in the etiology of type 2 diabetes. This includes analysis of mechanisms of insulin synthesis, processing and secretion to understand impairment of beta cell function as well as the field of beta cell regeneration. In the field of beta cell renewal the institute will contribute to the identification of the cellular origins of new beta cells in the adult, regulation of beta cell proliferation and downstream signaling events controlling the cell cycle machinery.
The major focus of the new Institute of Diabetes Research/Insulin Resistance will be the analysis of interaction of genetic components with environmental factors in order to develop insulin resistance and other pathophysiologically abnormalities.
The complex interplay between lipid and glucose metabolism with regard to insulin resistance will be exploited on the basis of systems biology leading to the modelling and elucidation of underlying metabolic networks.
Your Qualifications
Both institutes will serve as focal points for further enhancement and extension of diabetes research at the Helmholtz Zentrum München together with the Technische Universität München. They will collaborate with and support the already existing research activities in diabetes. The professor takes part in the training in the Faculty of Medicine, especially on the “Medical Life Science and Technology” PhD course of studies. If necessary, lectures are also required at the bio-scientific training courses of the TUM.
The applicants should hold a MD/PhD in life science or medicine.
A further requirement is the “Habilitation” or an equivalent scientific and educational experience which can also be acquired within the scope of a junior professorship or outside the university sector.
Applicants must not be older than 52 years at the time of appointment. Under certain circumstances exceptions are possible.
In cases of equal eligibility, preferential consideration will be given to disabled people.
The Technische Universität München and the Helmholtz Zentrum München wish to increase the proportion of women amongst the academic and scientific personnel und thus expressly invite qualified female scientists to apply for this position.
Please submit your application together with details of current and future research plans according to the published guidelines of the Faculty of Medicine
