PROGRAMME
The Marie Curie Initial Training Network GOODWATER was holding the first winterschool at the Helmholtz Zentrum München (HMGU).
Fundamental training to the fields of groundwater contamination has been provided, including lectures on hydrogeology, geochemistry, groundwater microbiology as well as on stable isotope analyses in groundwater systems.
Guest speakers were invited for the theoretical lessons and the training was complemented with hands-on training in the lab and a field trip to a contaminated site.
Instructors:
Prof. Dr. Rainer Meckenstock (HMGU), Dr. Tillmann Lüders (HMGU), Dr. Christian Griebler (HMGU), Prof. Dr. Piotr Maloszewski (HMGU), Dr. Martin Elsner (HMGU), Prof. Dr. Bernhard Schink (University of Constance), Peter Grathwohl (University of Tübingen)
The winterschool`s theoretical classes included lessons on Groundwater Microbiology, Microbial metabolism, Molecular Ecology, Geochemistry, Hydrogeology and stable Isotope Analysis
A poster session was organized to update everybody on the respective project`s progress
Posters can be seen here:
The participants were invited to a field trip, organized by our German Associate Partners (Isodetect & Arcadis D), to a funnel & gate system from the Munich City Utilities (SWM)
Further practical training included:
Practical training in ultracentrifugation
Methods in microbial ecology (flow cytometry, ATP measurements, sediment & porewater sampling)
Measurements of compound-specific isotope fractionation with GC-IRMS
Interpretation of tracer expteriments
