Open Source for Quality Health Care |

The seminar "Open Source Solutions for more Quality in Health Care" at STC2012 will provide an overview on open source software, open resources and solutions in health care. It is planned to take part on 18 April 2012 also as part of the MedSoft fair (http://www.armit.ru/medsoft/2012/).
Beside a general introduction it will present major, well-established software projects and summarise existing initiatives to support and promote its use. Natural to the characteristics of its subject, the seminar will be collaboratively held asking also the audience to join the discussion, suggest the focus interested in and propose ways to start a partnership for modernisation of health care practice in Europe.
The seminar will among others focus on
Pros and Cons of Open Source in Medical Informatics
Large scale and other outstanding Open Source projects in health care
Working Groups and further organisations and resources in the field of medical free and open source software
An additional session during
STC2012 will give more insight in LIFOSS.

10. - 11. Mai 2012 in Vienna
The eHealth2012 will take place in the Schönbrunn Palace Conference Centre in Vienna from 10th to 11th of Mai 2011.
The conference's motto and program target on building a bridge from research to application of information and communication technology in health care. Submitted and invited scientific presentations and posters as well as workshops and an interoperability showcase will contribute to that.
Although a considerable number of presentations - as well as most parts of the homepage - will be in German, which is the official conference language, papers can be submitted and presented in English as well.

The deadline for submission of papers and posters to the 24th European Medical Informatics Conference - MIE2012 - in Pisa, August 26th -29th, 2012 has been extended from 15.01.2012 to 30.01.2012 23:59 UTC.
We invite you to submit a broad range of contributions related to the latest achievements in eHealth, biomedical and health informatics. The specific focus for the MIE2012 conference is the various roles of eHealth in pursuing benefits seen in quality of life for patients, health-care personnel, citizens and the society. We encourage you to submit a contribution about methodologies and applications, successful stories or lessons learned from not so successful projects in the health-care domain.

New: Deadline for submitting papers and posters extended
The aim of the EFMI special topic conferences (STC) is to provide a forum to discuss achievements and actual experiences on specific topics in Medical Informatics in Europe (MIE). Its basis is innovative methods and approaches. STC enhances the communication among the professional communities of health informatics.
STC2012 -carrying on the traditional series of EFMI STC conferences- is one of the most important European events in the common sphere of medicine and informatics. Its major goal is to increase interaction and collaboration among professionals from both health and ICT. The STC conferences are organised in close collaboration with EFMI working groups.

GEP-HI, the Guidelines for Good Evaluation Practice in Health Informatics, is a methodology developed by the EFMI-WG EVAL. It is derived from many years of international experience in health information systems.
The seminar will start the EFMI special topic conference STC2012 on 18 April in Moscow (www.STC2012.eu). It will be continued by a workshop which will demonstrate the GEP-HI approach using a real health information system. A proposal for this workshop can be send to

IWEEE2012 e-Health in Emerging Economies |

The International Workshop on e-Health in Emerging Economies (IWEEE) - a biannual meeting held in Europe and in Latin America. The 5th IWEEE http://www.IWEEE.org will take place in Granada, Spain on the 11th of January 2012. The event is organized by GNU Solidario (http://www.gnusolidario.org/)
EFMI-WG LIFOSS and IMIA OS WG co-organise IWEEE2012 and promote the use of open source software in providing health care in developing countries and emerging economies. More information about the event is available on the website of

On the 12th and 13th of January the Open Source World
Conference http://www.opensourceworldconference.com/en will be held in
Granada which will enable participants to visit both events.

EFMI (European Federation for Medical Informatics, Prof. George Mihalas) started an initiative to link the regional organisations APAMI (Asia) and AMIA (for the Americas) together. It started by organising a panel during a Medical Informatics Conference and resulted in the development of a concept for traveling with health data and was supported by IMIA (International Medical Informatics Association). |

Kyriakos A. Kioulafas: a great supporter of medical informatics left us |

Professor Kyriakos A. Kioulafas passed away on 17 October 2011
Kioulafas was born in 1940. He was Professor at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens in the Department of Economics and Finance. He served as Dean of the School of Law and Economics and as Head of Department of Economics and Finance at the same University.
He was the Founder and Director of the private educational and research Institute of the Eastern Aegean (INEAG), an Institutional Member of EFMI, hosting the annual ICICTH Conference (International Conference on Information and Communication Technology in Health Care) on Samos Island 10 times.
He was full of plans for the next years. Summer schools and conferences on health informatics were discussed and planned last July. There is a hope that his work will be a basis for the future. EFMI will do its best to continue his work. |
