Siemens Launches a Smart Card |

Siemens Medical Solutions has introduced a chip-based patient health identification card that providers can use to access insurance, demographic and clinical data.
The Siemens Patient Health Card is about the size of a credit card. Patients can insert the card into a reader and enter a personal identification number to enable access to the data. In an emergency, providers can override the PIN system to access information.
The product from Malvern, Pa.-based Siemens includes applications to enable integration with hospital information systems. The card is designed to hold a clinical summary of a patient’s medical history.
Mount Sinai Medical Center and Elmhurst Hospital in New York were beta sites and tested the insurance and demographic data. They now will add clinical data and plan to deploy 1.2 million cards.
The card also soon will be able to hold electrocardiogram data, according to the vendor. More information is available at
