|
|
Prof. Mario Stefanelli died last night. He was a European leader in the medical informatics field and his department of "Informatica e Sistemistica" at teh University of Pavia is among the most highly regarded academic institutions in the world.
Mario was an important colleague in national, European and international societies and projects. His initiative in 1985 in medical expert systems formed the basis for the foundation and successful work of AIME (Artificial Intelligence in Medicine Europe). He strongly supported EFMI and IMIA activities and was Medinfo SPC chair in 2004.
He was also member of AMIA and ACMI fellow. His main scientific
contributions include mathematical modeling of biological systems,
expert systems, automated reasoning, computerized guidelines and
workflow systems.
We will miss a friend.
Rolf Engelbrecht
Message from the EFMI-President
Dear Colleagues,
It is with great sorrow and regret that I have to inform you that Professor Mario Stefanelli of the University of Pavia died yesterday after a hemorrhagic stroke. Professor Mario Stefanelli was a leader in the field of Medical Informatics and especially in Artificial Inteligence in Medicine. I can still remember sharing the same group in Brussels in 1986 developing the very first Workplan in Advanced Informatics in Medicine for Europe.
Mario participated in 1988 at the Athens meeting for the development of the very first curriculum for the European Master's in Health Informatics under the Erasmus initiative. Among his very rich activities in the field we would like to remind that Mario was the SPC chair in the very successful Medinfo2004 in San Francisco where immediatelly after that period he suffered the first stroke where remarkably fought back and during the last years he managed to be active as before.
We will always remember Mario as an excellent researcher in the field of Medical Expert Systems, a leader in the field of Medical Informatics and an energetic colleague.
On behalf of the EFMI community, I would like to extend our deepest condolences to his family, relatives, colleagues and friends.
Professor John Mantas
EFMI President
