From MIE2011 to the future Print E-mail
Image At the closing ceremony the EFMI President, Professor John Mantas, honoured the presence of the family of the late Dr. Rolf Hansen by saying that Rolf Hansen will always be remembered as one of the founders and pioneers of Medical Informatics in Europe and the ‘Rolf Hansen prize’ will make sure that his memory will never be forgotten.

Professor John Mantas referred also to the motivation of so many people to attend the MIE Conferences. He mentioned that there are mainly three driving forces.

  • The internal willingness of the humans to announce the scientific discoveries to the world through authoring and presentation of their papers in the Conference (the so-called ‘Eureka effect’),
  • The learning process that makes people willing to attend conferences, and finally
  • the intrinsic wish of many participants to excel other colleagues by trying hard to prepare for next year a paper (the so-called ‘Marathon effect’).
  • However, for the success of a Conference you need also successful leadership. The President said that there are two characteristics of a leader, to be courageous and bold by introducing new ideas and be innovative; second, a leader should work in a team and listen to the others. Those two characteristics were quite evident during MIE2011. Our host, the Norwegian Society for Medical Informatics represented by Petter Hurlen and Anne Moen, working as a team with their associates introduced new ideas and themes during MIE2011. The President to honour the LOC awarded them as a token of appreciation by EFMI two candle stands symbolising the beacon of knowledge. The President also thanked the chair of the SPC, Jos Aarts, by awarding him as a token of appreciation a metallic statue of the owl, the symbol of wisdom.

Professor John Mantas introduced AMI, the Russian Association for Medical Informatics and its chair Professor Michael Shifrin who will host the next STC2012 in Moscow in April 2012; also the Italian Society for Medical Informatics represented by Cristina Mazzoleni who will host the next MIE2012 in Pisa in August 2012. Finally the President thanked all the participants, authors, contributors, reviewers, and organisers for the most successful MIE, the MIE2011
