ISO EN 13606 – Electronic Communication of Patient Data
The international Standard ISO EN 13606 Electronic Health Record Communication enables cross sectoral exchange of medical data. This is based on a dual model approach using Archetypes. This ensures that data collected from various sources are correctly interpreted.
The dual model provides the basis for a stable information architecture. It separates information from knowledge. Archetypes are reproducing the medical concepts while taking care of the variety of clinical needs and local differences. Thus medical expertise can be integrated independent from technical concerns. This facilitates sustainability and maintenance of information systems.
Information is being structured according to the reference model, which contains generic blocks and components that assemble clinical contents. The clinical concepts (such as problems, medications, laboratory valies) are formally defined by Archetypes, which describe the metadata of the complex and constantly advancing concepts in the clinical routine. Thus the standardised structures predefined by the reference model are being supplemented by medical knowledge and thereby enable a semantically correct interpretation of the information.

Furthermore the CEN/ISO EN13606 Information Site offers a forum for sharing relevant information.
