6th Symposium on Environmental Allergy and Allergotoxicology: Climate Change and Allergy, München-Neuherberg and TUM-Campus Biederstein, January 29th – 31st, 2009
We cordially invite all of you to attend the 6th Symposium on Environmental Allergy and Allergotoxicology entitled „Climate change and Allergy“ to be held January 29th - 31st, 2009 at the Helmholtz Zentrum München and the TUM-Campus Biederstein, Germany. More than 30 international renowned speakers present their newest data on the influence of global warming on the development and maintenance of allergic diseases.
Allergic disorders represent a major health problem of most modern societies. In Germany every fifth child is suffering from an atopic disease such as rhinitis, asthma or eczema, and prevalence rates are still increasing to date.
The intense use of fossil fuels has climbed to the point that the resulting airborne particulates reflect enough energy to affect models of global warming and climate change. Impacts of climate change on aeroallergens include changes in the amount of pollen, the pollen allergenicity, the pollen season, and the plant and pollen distribution. In particular, there is strong evidence from various studies that observed higher temperatures due to climate change are associated with an earlier start of plant flowering in spring and summer and an earlier onset of pollen season in the northern hemisphere. Furthermore, not only have trends to an earlier and more intense pollen season for various species been reported, but also altered allergenicity of pollen.
The symposium will discuss direct and indirect consequences of global warming on allergy development and will focus on new treatment strategies in a changing world.
We do hope that many of you, junior and senior scientists, will be able to participate, as we expect this to be a very stimulating meeting. The campus of the Helmholtz Zentrum München and the TUM-Campus Biederstein offer excellent facilities to support communication, and Munich with its rich culture is always worth the visit.
We look forward to seeing you in Munich for an exciting and enjoyable symposium.
