Study objectives: To monitor age- and gender-specific trends in morbidity, mortality, and case fatality of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) in a defined population Specific aims: To elucidate the prehospital and early in-hospital phase of AMI. To observe population based long-term-survival after non-fatal AMI in relation to changes in acute medical care (prospective cohort analyses) Study design: Population registry linked to hospitals (hospitalized AMI patients) and health departments (death certificates) of the study region Study population: Inhabitants of the city of Augsburg and surrounding rural districts Augsburg and Aichach-Friedberg, age 25-74 (n = 400,000) Study team location: Central Hospital of Augsburg, Stenglinstr. 2, 86156 Augsburg, Tel. 089 / 400-43 73, Fax -2838, e-mail: kora.augsburg<AT>t-online.de Study methods: Registration of all hospitalized cases of AMI and all sudden coronary death of 25-to 74 year old inhabitants of the study area (about 1000/yr) Study period: Ongoing since 1985 Current status: The mobidity, mortality, and 28-day case fatality rates for AMI are included in the official Statistics Report of the Federal Republic of Germany (see www.gbe-bund.de and selected publications) Investigators: H.
