Task: Joint research in the field of biomedical aerosol research

Participation: The following units are presently involved in this Focus Network:
Institute of Epidemiology, Institute of Inhalation Biology, Institute of Ecological Chemistry, Institute of Radiation Protection, Institute of Toxicology and the Clinical working Group for Environmental Dermatology and Allergology

Steering Committee: Composed of the heads of the participating units and one coordinator. The task of the committee is to make decisions with regard to research programs, milestones, time schedules, and staff issues. A representative of the Scientific Technological Department (WT) is invited to sit on the committee as a permanent ‘guest’

Coordinator: Coordinates the research activities of the Focus Network and supervises time schedules and research progress in consultation with the institute managers.

Research Activities: The Focus Network comprises projects, which relate to exposure to and the effects of aerosol particles.

R&D Programs: The participating R&D programs state their involvement in the Focus Network’s research activity in percentage terms. The Focus Network may employ additional staff (2 scientists, 2 postgraduates). These posts will be distributed according to scientific demand and proposals will be submitted via the coordinator to the steering committee for decision.

Equipment: The R&D program applying for use of a piece of equipment states how far the equipment is used for research work in the Focus Network. The equipment is the property of the institute to which the FE program is assigned. The equipment can be used after consultation with the person in charge of the R&D program.

Duration of the Focus Network: The Focus Network will initially be limited to a period of five years.

Focus Network personnel: The Focus Network will have its own R&D number and will not be integrated into the participating institutes. The following personnel will be provided: 2 junior scientists, 2 post-graduates. The personnel will work on cooperation projects as agreed, under the supervision of the coordinator.

Helmholtz Relevance: The HGF intends to lead a major aerosol research project. This will either be in the framework of a funded strategy project or in the context of the planned program control. The project is based on a proposal for a funded strategy project which could not be implemented last year. Experts from several major research institutes are discussing the intended cooperation with regard to emission and reduction as well as exposition and effect.
