The human exposure to temporally and spatially variable ambient aerosols depends not only on their concentration but widely on behavioural aspects and the physiology of individuals and groups of individuals. Therefore, currently existing exposure models like „Geographic Information System (GIS)“ are applied and will be improved.
Dosimetric assessment comprises the intake of different fractions and components of ambient aerosols in the various regions of the respiratory tract, their metabolic fate and time dependent translocation and accumulation in secondary target organs or their elimination out of the body. Macroscopic as well as microscopic approaches are required to better understand the underlying mechanisms at the molecular and cellular level, particularly, with respect to ultrafine particles being not much larger than interacting biomolecules.
