About us

The main objective of the Research Unit of Molecular Epidemiology is to decipher the molecular causes and mechanisms of complex diseases like type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, atopic eczema, lung cancer, or obesity. The Research Unit is located in the Genome Analysis Center (GAC) of HMGU where methods and systems for genomics, epigenomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics and functional analyses have been established. We apply these methods on our population based children and adult cohorts (KORA, GINI, LISA) as well as on case populations of interest.

In this context the main goals are:

  • Better understanding of pathophysiology of selected common diseases
  • Pathway refinement
  • Looking for early markers of disease
  • Development of better diagnostic markers
  • Enabling individualized medicine
  • Find new drug targets

Additionally the biological specimen repository of the Department of Epidemiology including DNA, RNA, serum, plasma, urine, and immortalized cell lines is administered by our unit. Moreover we are responsible for sample preparation and sample storage of the German National Cohort participants.
