Novel Bioactives / Functional Metabolomics

In the last decades we followed a series of studies in looking quantitatively for targeted bioactive compounds in biological systems. A main focus of these was the signaling in the microbial world involving Quorum sensing (quinolones, peptidolipids, homoserine lactones, small acids).

We nowadays have developed, optimized and combined UHR metabolomics as a tool for profiling small bioactive compounds in complex biogeosystems with two screening strategies regarding the biological readout:

  1. Discovery by profiling complex biological samples against specified biological targets (tested by classical enzyme assays or multiplexed approaches). Our expertise in this field is reflected by the discovery of novel bioactives in the fields of quorum sensing inhibitors (from algae), elicitors / biofertilizers (microorganisms/rhizosphere), antibacterial / antifungal (from bacteria) as well as anti-HIV active molecules (from cyanobacteria, algea, plants, complex extracts), small molecules affecting allergy (from pollen) and immunoregulators (from probiotics).

  2. Assessment of the biological function and impact of selected novel metabolites on the metabolomes of cell cultures, model organisms (i.e. C. elegans) or microbes. Recently, our activities integrate our expertise in deep metabotyping with non-targeted single cell based phenotyping assays. Our vision is the use of these technologies in the future for personalize medicine.
