Research Focus

In March 2021, Kevin Schnepel started his PhD in the research project “Development and Improvement of a hyphenation setup between a hyper-fast gas chromatography and photoionization mass spectrometry”. Online mass spectrometry with photoionization (PI), a soft ionisation method, is a versatile technique for the characterisation of organic aerosol in gas phase. The hyphenation with a hyper-fast gas chromatograph enables the differentiation between isobaric compounds and is done with an optically heated fastGC. Therefore, a consumable-free electric modulator is used, which is capable to trap and release volatile and semi-volatile compounds, providing the discontinuous sample flow necessary for a successful gas chromatography. The current setup is capable of providing comprehensive fastGC-PIMS measurements with fastGC runtimes of 15 s.

Instrumentation

The instrumental setup consists of an electrical 2-stage modulator, an optically heated fastGC, an orthogonal acceleration time-of-flight mass spectrometer, a deuterium VUV-lamp for ionization and a heated 2-way-10-port valve.
