RESEARCH BIOGRAPHY

Barbara Giocastro acquired a postdoc position at the Universität der Bundeswehr München in February 2021. Parts of her studies are carried out at the cooperation group CMA at the Helmholtz Zentrum München. In her research, Barbara is focusing on the development of a demonstration system for a fully automated sampling of PM and gaseous phase of environmental aerosols and subsequent fully integrated analysis by GC×GC-MS.

Already in her PhD studies, she worked on the optimization and use of advanced comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC×GC-MS) methods within the context of food analysis. With regard to mass spectrometry, rapid-scanning single quadrupole, triple quadrupole, and low- resolution time-of-flight devices have been used in this research. In the field of GC×GC, she has carried out applications, method optimization studies, and in-depth studies on novel thermal and flow modulations systems, which benefits her current study.

EDUCATION

  • 2021 PhD in Chemical Science, University of Messina (Italy). Thesis: Optimization, evaluation and use of advanced chromatography-mass spectrometry methods within the context of food analysis.
  • 2016 Graduation in Pharmacy, University of Messina. Thesis: “Qualitative analysis of vegetable oils by using MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry”.
