RESEARCH BIOGRAPHY

In August 2019, Elena Hartner started her PhD at the cooperation group CMA. Her studies are a central part of the interdisciplinary research project aeroHEALTH (www.aerohealth.eu) concerning environmental as well as health-related effects of aerosols released to our environment. To investigate how atmospheric aging affects the health impact of aerosols, aerosol aging is simulated under atmospheric relevant conditions in oxidation flow reactor and chamber experiments. 

Elena’s main research focus lies on the comprehensive chemical profiling of volatile as well as semi-volatile organic compounds in this very complex matrix. In order to characterize the chemical composition of primary and secondary organic aerosols with a focus on the particle and gas phase, she is applying comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography – time of flight mass spectrometry (GCxGC-TOFMS).

The interdisciplinary aeroHEALTH project aims to connect these chemical characteristics with the biological responses of different aerosol types.
