What should I do if a dosimeter must be evaluated immediately on suspicion of a dose exceedance?

Return the dosimeter with the data of the person who wore it to the Official Personal Dosimeter Service. Enter the remark "emergency reading” legibly on the colored return label or on the envelope. Do not forget to specify the name of the contact person as well as his/her telephone/fax number, so that we can provide you with the result of the evaluation as soon as possible.

If the personal monitoring service has assigned a dosimeter to a certain wear period, is it possible to use it in another wear period?

As a general rule, film dosimeters and rings (type W and type X), which were assigned by our personal monitoring service to a certain wear period on the order form, the allocation form and the modification form may only be used in this wear period! Please, send the unused dosimeters back to our personal monitoring service with the next return.

With regard to Albedo-dosimeters, it is the customer who determines the wear period. The Albedo-dosimeters are issued to customers for a certain period of time. The dosimeters may only be used during this period. After application in the monitoring and the control area, respectively, the dosimeters must be sent back immediately to our personal monitoring service for evaluation. If the specified period has expired, those dosimeters that have not been used must be returned to the Official Personal Dosimeter Service for zero adjustment, for which we are charging a fee.

Our new OSL dosimeters are issued for a specific monitoring period (currently we only offer monthly monitoring) and may only be used within this period. Please, send back the unused dosimeters to our monitoring service with the next return.

The glass dosimeters are made available to customers for a specified period of time (max. 1/2 year). For this service, we charge a monthly rental fee. The dosimeters may only be used during this period. After application in the monitoring and control area, respectively, the dosimeter must be immediately sent to our personal monitoring service for evaluation. If the specified period has expired, those dosimeters that have not been used must be returned to the Official Personal Dosimeter Service for zero adjustment.

How long can I store solid-state dosimeters (e.g., Albedo, ring, glass dosimeters) before using them?

All solid state dosimeters should generally not be stored longer than three months, since they also measure the natural environmental radiation. When evaluating solid state dosimeters, an ambient dose of about 0.1 mSv is being generally taken into account. This corresponds to a period of time of about eight weeks between the delivery to the customer and the evaluation in our monitoring service. In case of a longer storage period, however, the recorded environmental dose may become so high that the actually unused dosimeters would exhibit a photon dose. With Albedo dosimeters, the neutron dose determination can be hindered in this case, and the measurement accuracy can be greatly deteriorated.

As a rule of thumb, a photon dose of about 0.05 mSv is being accumulated on your dosimeter during a one month’s storage period. If you want to use dosimeters, which have already been stored at your company over a longer period of time, you should first send them to our personal monitoring service for zero adjustment.

Can I write notes or add personal marks on the film dosimeter or paste an adhesive label onto the film?

The film badge itself should not be labeled. Attaching a label may cause dents on the internal highly sensitive film or may damage the casing. This leads to an inaccurate evaluation or it even makes impossible to evaluate the dosimeter. We have made the experience that marking the badge with a soft felt-tip pen is mostly harmless. In this case, however, the film badges could stick together, which in turn would affect the mechanical processing. Therefore, dosimeters containing such markings should be cleaned manually with alcohol before returning them to our personal monitoring service. The cartridges themselves may only be marked with the labels issued and examined by our dosimeter service, in order to make sure that no deterioration of the filter elements and thus a falsification of the results can occur.

What personal data are collected by the Official Personal Dosimeter Service for performing the personal monitoring?

In order to perform proper dosimetry, the Official Personal Dosimeter Service requires the customer’s first name/surname, maiden name, title, date of birth, place of birth and sex. The data will be treated in accordance with the rules regarding privacy protection and security of personal data. The evaluation results and the personal data have to be stored and kept for a period of 30 years.

Will my personal data be shared with third parties?

Yes, they will be shared with the Federal Radiation Protection Register and the competent inspection authorities in accordance with paragraph 63a StrSchV, paragraph 36a RöV (german only), paragraph 12c of the Atomic Energy Act and Annex 4 of the Directive laying down requirements for personal dose monitoring institutions.

When do I have to return the dosimeters to the personal monitoring service?

The deadline for returning the dosimeters is pre-printed on the delivery note.

Customers are asked to return the dosimeters to our personal monitoring service in time, so that the evaluation can be carried out not later than the date specified in the delivery note.

Customers whose monitoring period is limited to a calendar quarter or a half-year, respectively, are asked to return the dosimeters to the personal monitoring service in time, so that the evaluation can be carried out not later than at the end of the month following the expiration of the specified monitoring period.

Example: for film dosimeters issued for a calendar quarter, the monitoring period being April & May & June, the return deadline is the end of July.
