KORA Platform Augsburg (Kooperative Gesundheitsforschung in der Region Augsburg)

The research platform KORA (Cooperative Health Research in the Augsburg Region) provides the unique opportunity to perform long term population-based health research in Germany. The Institutes of Epidemiology (EPI) and of Health Economics and Health Care Management (IGM) maintain the KORA infrastructure, consisting of the KORA Study Center and the KORA Coronary Event Registry in Augsburg as well as the central KORA data base and a biobank at the HMGU campus in Munich-Neuherberg.

This infrastructure is used to perform large cross-sectional health surveys and cohort studies (with follow-up of up to 20+ years) in cooperation with scientific partners within the HMGU and from other research institutes and universities. Interdisciplinary projects on the KORA platform cover topics from classic and genetic epidemiology, health economics and health care research, and environmental health. Within the period from 2005 to 2007 alone, nearly 200 papers with results from the KORA research network have been published in peer-reviewed journals.

A major part of empirical research of the IGM is based on KORA, e.g. projects on the costs associated with chronic diseases (e.g. obesity) or on participation and outcomes in disease management programs (e.g. diabetes and coronary heart disease). In addition, the IGM significantly contributes to the KORA network by organizing central data management and maintaining the KORA data base.
