Welcome on the website of the Institute of Environmental Medicine (IEM)!

The Institute of Environmental Medicine combines translational research on environment health with an interdisciplinary academic teaching and with an extensive and integral patient care at the University Outpatient Clinic for Environmental Medicine, (Hochschulambulanz für Umweltmedizin, Universitätsklinikum Augsburg), thus forming an overall concept pointing the way ahead. Together, these three sections follow the common objective of helping to prevent and to treat chronic diseases in a sustainable way.

Within this research association, the IEM´s research focus is on basic and translational research about Environment-Human-Interaction with special attention to allergic diseases. The following six research fields are occupied with the resepctive tasks: Aerobiology, Clinical Research, Microbiology, Environmental Immunology, Environmental Bioinformatics, and Translational Immunology. The IEM employees are working on an interdisciplinary level within these six research fields in form of a matrix. Central part of the IEM and translational center of the HMGU in Augsburg is the Study Center and the University Outpatient Clinic for Environmental Medicine that can both recruit patients to clinical cohort studies as well as integrate research results into therapy and intervention studies.

Claudia Traidl-Hoffmann has been active in the field of medical environmental research and education together with her team for many years. As a physician scientist, she has a board certification for Allergology, Dermatology, Venereology, and Environmental Medicine. In cooperation with the Dermatology Department at the University Hospital Augsburg, they also offer a consultation for patients suffering from atopic dermatitis. Both operating clinics, the Klinikum rechts der Isar and the University Hospital Augsburg, are important partners of the translational research at the Chair and Institute for Environmental Medicine. The team consists of researchers, specialists, physician scientists, and interdisciplinary (PhD/MD) students as well as of employees which are concerned with matters of organization and planning.
