Political Consultancy

The social relevance of the ISS is demonstrated by the fact that members of the ISS take leading roles in national and international organisations.

UNSCEAR (United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation) reviews the current understanding on human radiation exposure and the associated health effects for the UN General Assembly.

The ICRP (International Commission on Radiological Protection) develops, based on current scientific knowledge about radiation exposures and radiation effects, recommendations to be used in international radiation protection.

The SSK (German Commission on Radiological Protection) advises the Federal Minister for Environment, Nature Conservation, Construction and Nuclear Safety in radiation protection issues.

EURADOS (European Radiation Dosimetry Group) develops the research program in dosimetry of ionizing radiation, to be used by the European Commission for the definition of research priorities for the coming decades.

ALLIANCE (European Radioecology Alliance) develops the research program in radioecology, to be used by the European Commission for the definition of research priorities for the coming decades.

The IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) is the world's central intergovernmental forum for scientific and technical co-operation in the nuclear field. It works for the safe, secure and peaceful uses of nuclear science and technology, contributing to international peace and security and the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals.

UNSCEAR

The mandate of the United Nations Scientific Committee on Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR, www.unscear.org) in the United Nations system is to assess and report levels and effects of exposure to ionizing radiation. Governments and organizations throughout the world rely on the Committee's estimates as the scientific basis for evaluating radiation risk and for establishing protective measures. Presently, the following members of the Institute of Radiation Protection are appointed as members of UNSCEAR:

NameFunction
Prof. Dr. Werner RühmMember of the German delegation
Dr. Markus EidemüllerMember of the expert group 'Biological mechanisms influencing health effects from low-dose radiation exposure'
Dr. Jan-Christian KaiserMember of the expert group 'Selected health effects'

ICRP

The International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP, www.icrp.org) is an independent, international organisation, which develops, maintains, and elaborates the International System of Radiological Protection used world-wide as the common basis for radiological protection standards, legislation, guidelines, programmes, and practice. Its members represent the leading scientists and policy makers in the field of radiological protection. Presently, the following members of the Institute of Radiation Protection are appointed as members of ICRP:

Dr. Alexander UlanowskiCommittee 5: Protection of the Environment (member)
Ms Maria Zankl Commitee 2: task group 96,103

SSK

The German Commission on Radiological Protection (SSK www.ssk.de) advises the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU) on issues concerning the protection from the risks of ionising and non-ionising radiation. Presently, the following members of the Institute of Radiation Protection are appointed as members of the SSK:
