Scientific Focus

Prof. Linseisen and his team will establish a patient-oriented epidemiologic research programme in close cooperation with clinical units of the Klinikum Augsburg an beyond. The scientific interests refer to early detection and secondary prevention of chronic diseases and their complications, and health care research based on patient cohorts and epidemiologic registries. The work will focus on diseases which are central to the mission of the Helmholtz Zentrum München, such as metabolic diseases, especially type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular and respiratory diseases.

Key features of the work are the collection of standardized information (incl. diagnoses, clinical examinations, treatment) and bio-specimens along with long-term data on the natural course of the disease. Together with the population-based studies in the same region (KORA, NAKO), the unique epidemiologic "Research Region of Augsburg" (city of Augsburg and the two adjacent counties) will be further developed and enriched by establishing studies with patients.

Together with the Chair of Epidemiology of the Ludwig-Maximilians University (LMU) Munich at UNIKA-T Augsburg (also headed by Prof. Linseisen), the Research Group „Clinical Epidemiology“ at HMGU will focus on

I.    the set-up of patient cohorts and epidemiologic registries to monitor the natural course of the diseases and to evaluate progress in prevention, early detection, therapy and prognosis
II.    deep phenotyping of patients to allow identification of patient subgroups, e.g., patients with a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes and their risk of developing major complications
III.    intervention studies in high-risk groups and patients with metabolic diseases to validate new concepts for (secondary) prevention.

Close cooperation with the (epidemiologic) institutes and working groups at HMGU will be of particular importance for the success of the group.
