History

The health of the population of Augsburg and its surrounding area has been the subject of research for more than 30 years. From 1984 – 1995 the World Health Organisation (WHO) conducted the MONICA (MONitoring trends and determinants in CAcardiovascular disease) project in the Augsburg region. In 1996, the MONICA project resulted in the KORA platform (Cooperative Health Research in the Augsburg Region) with the KORA Myocardial Infarction Register and the KORA Cohort headed by Prof. H.-Erich Wichmann. Today, the Myocardial Infarction Register is headed by Prof. J. Linseisen and Prof. C. Meisinger at Augsburg University Hospital. The KORA study today comprises the KORA cohort with biosample bank and data management under the direction of Prof. Annette Peters at Helmholtz Zentrum München.

The extensive database and biological specimen repository provide an excellent platform for national and international health research. More than 200 research projects a year are conducted with regional, national and international partners. To date, more than 2,000 publications have been issued.
