History

The health of the population of Augsburg and its surrounding area has been the subject of research for more than 30 years. From 1984 – 1995 the World Health Organisation (WHO) conducted the MONICA (MONitoring trends and determinants in CAcardiovascular disease) project in the Augsburg region. In 1996, the MONICA project was the basis for the KORA platform under the direction of Prof. H.-Erich Wichmann (CV), who at the time was Director of the Institute of Epidemiology, GSF. Today, KORA encompasses the KORA cohorts, the KORA Myocardial Infarction Register, the KORA biobank and data storage.

The extensive database and biological specimen repository provide an excellent platform for national and international health research. More than 200 research projects a year are conducted with regional, national and international partners. To date, more than 2,000 publications have been issued.
