Metabolism and Health

About 350 million people worldwide have diabetes mellitus. In Germany, approximately ten percent of the population lives with the metabolic disease. Overweight is an important risk factor. That is why we at Helmholtz Zentrum München are conducting intensive research to understand why people become overweight and why many overweight people develop diabetes mellitus.

Knowing exactly how obesity and diabetes develop and what risk factors are involved helps people to stay healthy. As a patient, it is important to be well informed about diagnosis, treatment and prevention in order to cope better with life with the disease.

With this services we promote the exchange between science and society on diabetes mellitus:

diabinfo - The Diabetes Information Portal

At diabinfo.de you find independent, comprehensible and quality-assured information on prevention and treatment of diabetes. With its two main topics 'Preventing Diabetes' and 'Living with Diabetes' the portal addresses both people who already suffer from the metabolic disorder and those who want to prevent it. GPPAD - A World Without 1

As part of the Global Platform for the Prevention of Autoimmune Diabetes (GPPAD), scientists from Europe are fighting for a world without the autoimmune disease type 1 diabetes. Studies are underway to identify infants with an elevated genetic risk of developing type 1 diabetes, and that aim to prevent the disease.

Teaching and learning

For teachers, we develop scientifically sound and innovative teaching materials on the topic of diabetes, which are available for free. Pupils learn how to deal with their health in a responsible and self-determined manner in order to stay healthy in the long term and to prevent illness. (In German)
