Introduction to Python

Course description

Requirements: Programming skills with any kind of programming language, e.g. course Introduction to R . Basic knowledge in Statistics is recommended, but not mandatory, e.g. course Introduction to Statistics.

Your profit: The participants will be taught how to get started with Python and will achieve a basic understanding how Python works. This course is an introductory programming course in Python designed for people with no or low knowledge in Python. However, we recommend to have already slight programming skills, for example in R, MATLAB, or similar.
The course is a prerequisite for the scanpy courses of the Department of Computational Health.

Topics: This introductory course on Python covers:

  • Variables and calculation
  • Lists and sublists
  • Arrays and matrices
  • Data sets using pandas
  • Data management
  • Descriptive statistics using NumPy and pandas
  • Basic plots using Seaborn
  • Loops and functions

Methods:

The course consists of lessons on how to use Python and hands-on examples with best-practice solutions.

During the Corona-pandemic the course is held as an online course. Please consider the following constraints:

  • It will be held online via the software Zoom.
  • Please check before hand on zoom.us/test whether your computer is compatible with the tool. (No registration necessary, but you have to download some tools)
  • A stable internet connection is absolutely necessary, optimal would be a LAN access.
  • You do NOT need to have a microphone or camera, since we offer a written chat interaction from your side. However, having a camera and a microphone is advantageous.
