ECRHS II (2000 - 2010)

European Community Respiratory Health Survey

Study objectives:
To determine the impact of indoor and outdoor pollution on changes in lung function, bronchial responsiveness, incidence, and remission of respiratory and allergic diseases.

Specific aims:

  • To determine the prevalence, incidence and prognosis of allergy, allergic disease and low lung function in adults living in Europe.
  • To describe the distribution of exposure to known or suspected environmental risk factors (indoor and outdoor) associated with the incidence and prognosis of allergy, allergic disease and low lung function.
  • To determine the risk attributable to chronic exposure to these environmental risk factors for the incidence and prognosis of allergy, allergic disease and low lung function.
  • To identify subgroups within the population who may be more susceptible to these environmental risk factors.
  • To investigate an equalisation of the prevalences of allergy, allergic disease and low lung function in the two German study centers over nine years.

Study design:

Nine year follow-up phase of a prospective study in more than 20 European centers. Extension of follow up.

Study population:
In each study area approximately 300 adults aged 30 to 54 years who participated 9 years ago in the medical examination of the European Respiratory Health Survey (ECRHS I, 1990-1992) in Erfurt and Hamburg.

Study area:
German centers: Erfurt (East Germany), Hamburg (West Germany).

Study methods:
Screening questionnaire with 9 questions about respiratory health (Stage I)

Medical examination (Stage II)

  • Long questionnaire (online questionnaire) and occupational modules
  • Lung function testing
  • Bronchial responsiveness to methacholine challenge
  • Serum specific IgE measurement
  • Genetic analysis of blood samples

Indoors sampling (Stage III)

  • Indoor questionnaire
  • Determination of the concentration of house mite allergen in mattress dust

Outdoor measurement, in parallel to the medicinal examination

PM2.5 (Erfurt only)

Study period:
10/2000 – ongoing.

Current status:
The ECRHS II survey was finished in December 2001. In Erfurt 548 subjects responded to the mailed invitation letters (n = 715) and sent back the completed screening questionnaire (stage I). In Hamburg 672 of 900 contacted subjects answered the screening questionnaire.
All subjects who answered the screening questionnaire were invited to the study centers to participate in the medical examination (stage II). In Erfurt 287 subjects participated in the medical examination, while in Hamburg 303 subjects were examined in the study center.
In the indoor sampling 197 subjects participated in Erfurt and 176 subjects in Hamburg, respectively (stage III). Planning of the 20 year follow-up.
