Biological age in lung health and disease

In view of experimental and clinical evidence for the involvement of ageing processes in the pathogenesis of respiratory diseases, particularly COPD, we investigate whether there is an association between biological markers associated with ageing and basic or advanced indices of pulmonary function as well as diagnosed lung diseases. The spectrum of investigated markers comprises telomere length as one of the best established markers of biological age, epigenetic ageing markers based on DNA methylation patterns as well as serum metabolites.
